When you request data in graphics form (using the 401, 201P, 201Q, or 101A programs), the output from Datastream is received into the Graphics window. In the Graphics window you can:
View a single graph or up to eight at once (a layout)
Annotate graphs and layouts
Configure the sytles of the text, lines, and fills
Save
Browse through saved graphs
Export
Example 1: Program 401A (Line chart of up to 3 series)
Step 1:
This program enables you to plot values for up to three securities, series, or expressions from a specified date. You can plot values as actual values, or as indices starting from 100, or as values rebased to the starting value of the first series. You can select program 401A either directly at the Program Number prompt or via the Program Finder menu by selecting Type of Request 'Graphs', Type of Data 'Any' and 'Line chart of up to 3 series' under Programs.
Step 2:
At the first prompt, "CODE OR EXPRESSION 1", enter BP for British Petroleum. At the second prompt, "CODE OR EXPRESSION 2", enter ICI for Imperial Chemical Industries. At the third prompt, "CODE OR EXPRESSION 3", enter BOOT for Boots. At the seventh prompt, "VALUES MAY BE PLOTTED", enter 2, to select "ALL VALUES SHOWN IN INDEX FROM STARTING AT 100". To select codes for prompts one to three you can optionally use Code Lookup. Tod do so, first select the "Equities" option, then type in the company names. Note that company names are not held as company initials (for further exmplanation see the section on codes).
Example 2: Program 401F (Moving average and momentum)
Step 1:
This program enables you to plot a security, series or expression together with up to two moving averages and a momentum chart. You can select program 401F either directly at the Program Number prompt or via the Program Finder menu by selecting Type of Request 'Graphs', Type of Data 'Any', and 'Moving average and Momentum' under Programs.
Step 2:
To run this program you type the code of your choice at the "CONTRACT, CODE OR EXPRESSION" prompt. You can optionally select furhter graph criteria. For example, you can plot a graph showing the DAX performance price index from the 1st of January 1990 to the current date with a second moving average period of 250 days by entering DADINDX at the "CONTRACT, CODE OR EXPRESSION" prompt, and then typing 250D at the "SECOND MOVING AVERAGE" prompt to select a period of 250 days. Finally, at the "START DATE" prompt type 01/01/90 to select your starting date. Once you have made these selections, press ENTER to run the program.
