There are three basic ways of downloading Datastream
data. Which one you pick depends on what you want to be
able to do with the data. All three items are available
under the FILE menu in the main Datastream program
window.
Capture to Save File:
This method of downloading saves files in a form readable
by Datastream. Use this method of downloading if you
expect to use your data only for other Datastream
programs.
- Select CAPTURE TO SAVE FILE in the FILE menu.
- In the new window, enter the name your save file
will be called ( Use the form a:\filename.dst to
save to floppy drive A) and click OK.
- Perform your search, pressing Enter to scroll
through your data.
- When all the data has been displayed or you wish
to discontinue saving, click STOP CAPTURE TO SAVE
FILE in the FILE menu.
Capture to Plain Text:
This method of downloading saves data in plain ascii text
format, readable by most text editors or word processors.
Use this method if you are downloading company reports or
simple tabular data.
- Select CAPTURE TO PLAIN TEXT in the FILE menu.
- In the new window, enter the name your save file
will be called ( Use the form a:\filename.txt to
save to floppy drive A) and click OK.
- Perform your search, pressing Enter to scroll
through your data.
- When all the data has been displayed or you wish
to discontinue saving, click STOP CAPTURE TO
PLAIN TEXT in the FILE menu.
Convert Data Channel/Fundline:
This method of downloading saves data in a form readable
by most spreadsheet and database programs. Use this
method of downloading if you intend to download large
amounts of data or wish to be able to manipulate data
using programs such as Microsoft Excel, Harvard Graphics,
Lotus 123, etc.
There are three Datachannel programs which can be used to
download data for use in spreadsheets: 900A,
900B, 900C. These programs are accessible by
choosing the DOWNLOAD option as your
Type of Request and then choosing the correct Type of
Data. These programs retrieve the same data as programs
described previously in this handbook. The difference is
that these three programs will return the same data, not
in tabular form, but as single lines of data separated
only by commas. To download in this manner:
- Select CONVERT DATA CHANNEL/FUNDLINE
in the FILE menu.
- In the new window, choose to save data as the
filetype CSV and enter the name your save file
will be called using the form a:\filename.csv to
save to floppy drive A. Click OK.
- Perform your search. Enter the parameters for
your search into program 900A, 900B, or 900C.
Press Enter to execute your search and continue
pressing Enter to scroll through your data.
- When all the data has been displayed or you wish
to discontinue saving, click STOP DATA
CHANNEL/FUNDLINE in the FILE menu.
Example 1: Download
the data obtained from performing the equities search
described on that document in this handbook.
- You have done the search once already as
described and know that it works, and that it
retrieves the data you are seeking.
- Return to the main Datastream window by clicking
the Clear button in the top left of the
Datastream window.
- Select CONVERT DATA CHANNEL/FUNDLINE
in the FILE menu.
- In the new window, choose to save data as the
filetype CSV and enter the name
a:\anyname.csv to save to floppy drive A (you
must have put a disk into drive A to enter this
name). Click OK.
- In the main window, select Download as your Type
of Request.
- Next, select Equities as your Type of Data.
- From the three available programs, select the one
for up to 1004 values for a series, 900B.
- Enter the parameters for your search: the code,
the frequency, the beginning and end dates.
- Press Enter. The data will appear on the screen
in continuous lines separated only by commas.
Continue to press enter to scroll through to the
end.
- When you have reached the end of the data, select
STOP DATA CHANNEL/FUNDLINE in
the FILE menu. There is now a file called
anyname.csv on the disk you put in drive A
containing the data we had retrieved in the
search described elsewhere in this handbook.
To retrieve this data open the file, anyname.csv from
any spreadsheet program. Always save this file with its
.csv ending so that you may have the option of appending
further data to this file in the future. If you have many
series to download, Datastream macros enable one to
automate this downloading process. For help creating
Datastream macros, please consult a librarian.
Example 2: Program 900A (Up to 10 series
or a list at one date)
Step 1
- This program enables you to download data at one
point in time for a number of named securities or
series, or for a list. Program 900A is one of
three programs which enable you to download data
for use in the software package of your choice,
such as a spread sheet package. Before you run
Program 900A you need to click on the DSWindows
Convert data for spreadsheets button, then select
on of the Choose destination options. For this
example, click on the Clipboard option, then
click on OK. Note that the Convert data for
spreadsheets button should remain highlighted.
Step 2
- You can now run the 900A program. You can select
this program either directly at the Program
Number prompt, or via the Program Finder menu by
selecting Type of Request 'Data for
Spreadsheets', Type of Data 'Any',
and 'Up to 10 series or a list at one
date only' under Programs. To run this
program type in the code of your choice at the
"ENTER CODES:" prompt. For example, LS&PCMPS
for the Standard and Poors Computer Software and
Services list, and press ENTER. You will be
prompted for the data items of your choice (for
example NAME, P, PE, DY, and MV).
You will then be prompted for the date from which
you wish data to be downloaded. For example, type
-1M to select data for the past
month, then press ENTER. The selected data will
now be downloaded. Finally, click again on the
Convert data for spreadsheets button (it should
still behighlighted). You can transfer the data
held in your clipboard to the software package of
your choice. (E.g., you can use the Edit>Paste
option to load the data into MS Excel).
