Footnote 1

See I.D. Codebook for list of names and numbers.  Although the N for the sample is
1417, the I.D. sequence numbers hav a few gaps in them.  Thus, the last number is 1425.  
For a list of names and numbers, there is a deck of cards giving names corresponding
to numbers.

Footnote 2

For all dates, only the last three numerals are punched.  Thus, the year 1813 would be 
punched 813.  Missing data are designated by blanks on the cards.  Data not
relevant to particular individuals are also coded blank.

Footnote 3

When an individual is known to have achieved a given rank, but the date of this 
achievement is unknown, 999 is punched in the appropriate columns.

Footnote 4

Terms for governors include all governorships (civil and military), both in the 
provinces and in Moscow and St. Petersburg.
